 'The Awakening' (1980) Mike Newell.

Its 'Moses Vs The Mummy' in first-time director Mike Newell's mythologically-inclined dreamily desert-set, eerily atmospheric murder-fest! While occasionally arid, 'The Awakening' is nonetheless a terrific, old-fashioned supernatural yarn with a robustly authoritative performance by heroic he-man Heston as world-renowned archaeologist Matthew Corbeck, and a truly lovely, roaringly sonorous score by majestic mood-maestro Claude Bolling. Somewhat sparingly based on Bram Stoker's grave story of ancient Egyptian malediction, and while some notably nimble narrative liberties are expeditiously taken, the film's sublime cinematic cutie-pie scream dream Stephanie Zimbalist is sinisterly stalked by the murderous spirit of a maniacal Egyptian queen, her terrible soul-imperilled plight finally forcing an anguished Chuck to get fully medieval on this malevolent, daughter possessing anciently evil animus! Slow, and assured, 'The Awakening' is a superior, albeit languidly-paced, early 80s fright-flick. While I have never been in denial about my zealous appreciation of this exotic, dust-clogged Egyptian spook-show, many might, perhaps, find this one a stupefying supernatural snooze, and, remember, sometimes mummy doesn't always know best! For me, the Stentorian, swarthily-chested Heston's sole foray into horror cinema is a most laudable adventure, and Mike Newell's handsome-looking 'The Awakening' is well worth digging up, since the film's curse of being so poorly remembered is entirely fallacious, as this crusty celluloid terror tomb is still well worth violating! Besides, anything starring the outspoken, vividly vivacious, and fleshly voluptuous Miriam Margolyes is well worth a shout, mayte!
