'Initiation' (1984)- Larry Stewart.

This eternally perky, plasma-soaked 80s slasher concerns the pledge-pranking purgatory of pristine-looking, preppy-go-lucky, Kelly Fairchild (Daphne Zuniga). Fated to endure the hazing, teen-aged hysteria of hell week, wherein she falls for her dreamy-looking, dream researching beau, Peter (James Read) who attempts to unearth the long-suppressed origins of her aggressively reoccurring nightmare. The younger, Kelly nightly revisits the Vaseline-lensed, intimate congress of her mother with some elusive, nightmare-invoking stranger, which disturbingly climaxes in an chaos-inducing fireside conflagration!

Plucky brunette, Kelly and her two lissome fraternity initiates, Alison (Hunter Tylo) and, Marcia (Marilyn Kagan) surreptitiously enter her adulterous father's (Clu Gulager) cavernous department store in order to begin their initiation. The amiable girl pledges are blithely unaware that the frenzied breakout in a nearby mental facility has sent the troubled inmate to their location! Ostensibly there to purloin an item requested by the magnificently odious Pledge Trainer of Delta Rho Chi, Megan (Frances Peterson). While 'The Initiation' only rarely veers from the universally accepted slasher symphony of relentless unseen sicko, crudely slashing extremely screamly teens with steely severity, yet somehow, even without the welcome element of surprise, this goofy, enjoyably high-spirited 80s blood-spiller remains a pretty fair cooze-killer!

There's nothing exceptional in 'The Initiation', the formulaic, trope-sodden text is lightweight, and the film's technical aspects, while professional, are rarely more than adequate. That being said, the sparkier elements of 'The Initiation' are the winningly zesty performances by a gamely excitable young cast. Whereas, lugubrious screen veterans, Clu Gulager and, Vera Miles portray their stock characters with all the somnolence of comatose soap actors. In spite of this, The Initiation is, perhaps, one of the very rare instances whereby the collectively mediocre ingredients of a white bread 80s slasher miraculously coalesces into an inexplicably joyous, generously cheese-laden portion of drive-thru slice n' dicing righteousness! The Initiation's weird watchability being increased a hundredfold by the deliciously thicc security guard's rakishly pencil-thin moustache!
