 'El Chupacabra' (2003) – Paul Wynne/Brennon Jones.

The noughties may not have been quite so bereft of B-Movie wonder as some have claimed, granted, it was relatively slim pickings for monster movie maniacs, but directors Paul Wynne & Brennon Jones unleashed a scintillatingly toothsome, terrifically Troma-tized terror title with their monstrously menacing, modestly budgeted blood-spiller 'El Chupacabra'! As creepy celluloid cryptids go, this livid-looking, lightning-swift, flesh-feasting freak is a rapaciously carnivorous, sensationally savage, crimson-eyed calamity set loose in the downbeat splendour of sun-hazed Los Angeles to feed uninhibitedly on the increasingly disturbed denizens of this financially depressed neighbourhood! With no earthly bindings capable of arresting the eerie ingress of this mythical, inhumanly strong, spleen-churningly sinister, carotid craving creep, the impossibly weighty responsibility of slaying 'El Chupacabra' is stoically shouldered by our plucky heroes animal control officer (Eric Alegria), and tamale hot pseudo-scientist (Elina Madison).

'El Chupacabra' (2003) is an ambitious low budget splatter-fest, and for the moist part, it succeeds triumphantly, as all the deliciously lurid, ridiculously overripe ingredients that are absolutely essential for a fun B-Horror have colourfully coalesced into one of the more majestically mayhemic monster movies, a midnight movie marvel all too many monster-loving B-horror fans seem sadly unaware of. Along with our fang-tastic, persistently predatory, perversely photogenic protagonist El Chupacabra, the bountiful bravura blood-spillage, and divinely dismal dialogue, what endeared me moistly to this disarmingly silly splatter-fest are the hilariously exaggerated performances by a hysterically gamy cast of overcooked hams, with an especially crackling performance by Jerry Rodriguez as the salty pig Det. Noriega, and it would be remiss of me if I didn't highlight the fearsomely funky score by music maestro Mark Schulz, his dynamic end credits theme being a diabolically dope example of his ominous oeuvre. While the Hard Gore DVD looks and sounds fine, a Blu-ray upgrade would be greatly appreciated!

'When ancient evil 'El Chupacabra' is gorily unleashed in the burnished City of Angels, god help ya'!!!'
