'Phenomena' (1985) – Dario Argento.
Seen within this increasingly dull epoch, clotted with tawdry remakes, homage-ridden mediocrity, and sophomoric supernatural swill, famed visual artist Dario Argento's far-out phantasmagoria shines ever brighter, emphatically remaining one of his most outlandish, nerve-nuking nightmares, and one who's entomologically eerie enigma retains its multi-faceted fascination to this very day! Beautiful, uncommonly sensitive, preternaturally gifted Jennifer (Jennifer Connelly) finds her sudden unwanted move to an isolated Swiss boarding school to be anything but restful, greatly upset by the increasingly terrifying news reports of some malevolent, mountain-stalking slayer with a pernicious penchant for piercing pretty perky teens nubile physiognomy with diabolical derma-flaying efficacy! (try sayin' that with a snoot full of cheap whiskey!!!!!)
Jennifer's terrible anxiety, and stultifying sense of alienation causes her to sleepwalk directly into a lurid, labyrinthine murder mystery, wherein brave Jennifer must call upon the scholastic aid of famed entomologist Professor John McGregor (Donald Pleasence) his loyal chimp Bella, and eerily utilize her phenomenal gift to commandeer the aid of all manner of ominously obliging creepy crawlies in order to discover the diabolical den of the degenerate killer polluting the pure crystalline spring waters of the Transylvania of Switzerland with his victims grisly remains! The truly lovely, sympathetic performance from Jennifer Connolly as our fearless fly-wrangling heroine, plus no less winning performances from terror icons Donald Pleasence, and Daria Nicolodi are a delight, with prog-metallians Iron Maiden, and Giallo maestro Claudio Simonetti providing a suitably exhilarating accompaniment to some of Dario Argento's most memorably macabre murders!
'Phenomena is sinisterly skewed, extra-sensory slasher perfection!' – Weirdlingwolf.
