'The Gorilla' (1939) – Allan Dwan.
No one dares make a monkey outta Bela Lugosi in Allan Dwan's sporadically spooky, splendidly strident simian shenanigans 'The Gorilla'. This monochrome, far from monotonous mirth-maker is totally bananas! The years have been kind to this zany 30s gag-fest, as it remains a chucklesome treat witnessing towering terror titans Atwill & Lugosi sardonically spoof their sinister screen personas with such uncaged apish glee! and only the worst kinda' moody monkey putz wouldn't get themselves joyfully wrapped up in sublimely silly, slapstick-slathered monkey puzzle, 'The Gorilla'. The boffo performances, plentiful pratfalls, and fabulously fuzzy-headed plot proves one amusingly tough nut to crack! While some viewers may well find The Ritz Brothers unrelentingly broad B-Movie buffoonery a trifle overzealous at times, their audaciously corny quips, pitiful sleuthing, and majestic madcap mugging brought a welcome whackiness to The Gorilla's outsized animal antics!
