'Sphinx' (1981) - Franklin J. Schaffner.

Enlivened by, Michael J. Lewis's rousing score, and an exceptionally fine cast, this underappreciated, Scarab-bright thriller is certainly no unheralded masterpiece, but it's enormous fun! There's darkly duplicitous, Maurice Ronet, a scintillatingly stern, Frank Langella, a curious cameo by, Sir John Gielgud, and ravishing, Lesley Anne-Down plays the dishy damsel in distress with an enjoyably unfiltered zeal!I do love a zesty, adventure-laden, Pyramid-centric romp, and none comes rompier than Schaffner's flawed, yet eminently diggable Egyptian potboiler.

Not a bad film, the technical/aesthetic qualities are solid, but, as yet, this can't legitimately be classified as a burgeoning cult film. That being said, the distractingly delectable, triumphantly tremulous Egyptologist, Erica Baron's (Lesley Anne-Down) frequent bouts of hysteria has palpable psychotronic qualities! Malign ancient mysteries, forbidden love, and dazzlingly exotic locations, 'Sphinx' concludes boisterously with a humdinger of a climax! While the muddled text is not without incongruity, this remains one of those lusty, lazy Sunday afternoon epics whose continued fascination, much like the imperious 'Sphinx' herself has maintained its allure!
