'Coup d'état' (1973) - Yoshishige Yoshida.

A fascinating, immaculately composed, greatly refined historical drama about Japanese revolutionary Ikki Kita (Mikuni Rentarō) and the failed military coup of 1936. The powerful performances, increasingly dread atmosphere, compelling text, and stark electronic musical accompaniment by avant-garde composer, Toshi Ichiyanagi are exemplary. It is impossible not to continually marvel at ace cameraman, Motokichi Hasegawa's captivating photography. The conspicuously gifted director, Yoshishige Yoshida mastery of composition is never less than breathtaking, each frame is a truly exquisite work of art. 'Coup d'état' (1973) vividly remains a remarkable work of cinema by one of Japan's true iconoclasts, again, his extraordinary visual acuity is second to none.
