'Harry's Out'
(1971). TV doc.
A refreshingly candid, unexpurgated, consistently compelling early 1970s documentary that captures legendary Lewisham lag Harry Haward following his release from Pentonville Prison. Harry's Out is a surprisingly warm and affectionate view of an outspoken, beloved, hugely charismatic villain/socialist, folk hero, Harry Haward. This is rock solid, frequently fabulous non-fiction filmmaking, a roughly hewn proletarian gem that remains an essential watch for vintage documentary addicts. A compelling historical piece on lahnden Villainy, and, if, like me, you greatly relish seeing beautifully grainy 16mm footage of a bygone Britain, you are in a for a real treat. Harry's Out is legit Top Ten documentary gold, Harry 'imself is a propah gent, hard as nails, and twice as useful! The vibrant city streets, noisome boozers, shops, wonderful accents, period fashions, and propah choice banter are a constant delight!
"He's a very likeable rogue is, Harry!”
