'Open Space' (1987) The Forgotten People.
An especially compelling episode of influential, highly regarded public service programme Open Space. 'The Forgotten People' concerns the Gilheaney family's plight, and the indignity experienced by other frustrated travellers who are denied a secure place to live. Forced to reside at a grotty, rat-infested 'illegal Gypsy Sites' without any basic facilities, and being refused access to local schools for their children, bluntly exposes the profound level of societal/governmental prejudice. Each 30-minute episode of Open Space was produced by members of the public, allowing minorities to put across their unfiltered points of view in each informative mini-doc.
