'Horror Hospital' (1973) – Antony Balch.
With the welcome availability of his transgressive exploitation classic 'Bizarre Sex' (1970), and the grand Guignol, medically maniacal, surgically sardonic, sinisterly surrealistic 1970s splatter-fest 'Horror Hospital' (1973), bravura B-Movie director Antony Balch's vivid contribution to the heady pantheon of cult British Horror is more widely recognised today, and it would be fair to say that the wickedly twisted, kaleidoscopically kooky, biologically unsound machinations of Michael Gough's diabolically demented Doctor Storm makes for a phantasmagorically strange, rewardingly sinister, blackly funny horror film; wherein lithe 70s stud muffin Robin Askwith, and disarmingly pretty Vanessa Shaw meet cutely on the train, fortuitously discovering that they are both currently underway to the very same destination, only to later discover that their fateful sojourn at idiosyncratically insane health resort 'Brittlehouse Manor' all too gruesomely reveals that the good Dr Storm's avant-garde approach to physical well-being is certainly no less extreme than Dr Moreau's singularly grisly take on advanced animal husbandry! Frequently showing more guts than Hammer, and packed with saltier nuts than Amicus's 'Asylum', the singularly stylish, terrifyingly trippy, sublimely camp 'Horror Hospital' will terminally transplant you into a brain-warpingly weird nightmare of delirious terror!
