'Revenge' (2017) – Coralie Fargeat.

While grimly taking place within the arid, desperate desolation of the super-heated desert 'Revenge' frequently explodes in a vivid panoply of lurid, crimson-hued violence! Director Coralie Fargeat hungrily objectifies the giddy good-time girl Jen (Matilda Lutz), her faux blonde head fizzing with glitzy-glamorous California dreaming, as the voyeuristic camera leaves no delectably nubile nook, or edible cranny tantalizingly undocumented, but this L.A.loving, lusciously long-legged lolly pop shall soon brutally undergo a savage, quasi-spiritual rebirth, being divinely baptized in a gruesomely cathartic B-Movie bloodbath of righteous revenge! While the predatory, retrograde males, including Jen's plainly sociopathic millionaire lover Richard (Kevin Janssens) are roughly sketched meat puppets, Jen's monstrous physical abuse, and peyote-infused, Phoenix-like awakening from the fiery talons of death are boldly, and excitingly rendered!

While 'Revenge' flexes an all-too familiar cinematic trope, gifted director Fargeat deliriously refracts it through a kaleidoscopic lens of visceral hyperreality! Except for movie maestros Russ Meyer, and Radley Metzger, Fargeat unapologetically celebrates the singularly beguiling splendour of the female form, as sleek-limbed siren Matilda Lutz's mythic transformation from coquettish party girl to blood-spattered Amazon makes for primal, hugely edifying genre cinema! While Revenge's muscular, visually dynamic mise-en-scene owes a great debt to avant-hard innovators Nicolas Roeg and Donald Cammell, stylish film-maker Coralie Fargeat has brain-boggling panache to spare! Avenging angels don't come any more majestic than Matilda Lutz! 'Revenge' is dayglo-grisly, wild at heart, and weird on top!'
