'Ninjababy' (2021) - Yngvild Sve Flikke.

Of the few contemporary indie-films I have recently seen, none the appeal, uncommon zest and rigour of talented writer/director Yngvild Sve Flikke's deliciously lively, refreshingly whimsical, wickedly unsentimental, fully mental, prenatal comedy drama 'Ninjababy' (2021). While the emotionally distraught Rakel makes for one of the most reluctant mummies in movie history, the micro-Ninja in her barely showing belly is very, very funny! Flikke's fabulously funky feminist feature positively bulges with vivid performances, the stridently witty text, and fearless lack of sentimentality make it a boldly imaginative, sublimely skewed, thought-provokingly shrewd, frequently cockle-warming, tummy-ticklingly good comedy!

While the conspicuously talented, eye-poppingly exquisite Kristine Thorp is on charmingly chaotic form as the greatly beleaguered mum-not-to-be, vociferously expressing her scintillating maelstrom of hormonal confusion as the opinionated, far from broody graphic artist Rakel suffers through an acute case of PND (Pre Natal Delirium), her sardonically insolent foetus effortlessly steals the show with its animated eruptions of epigrammatic Ninjababy wisdom! For many of us life is a series of maddeningly arbitrary, emotionally excruciating failures, a frequently undignified experience with little hope for redemption, making genuinely edifying films like 'Ninjababy' not only a welcome diversion, but damn near essential viewing!
