'Heaven Above!' (1963) – The Boulting Brothers.
I've long been a great admirer of the Boulting Brothers witty, intelligently crafted comedies, and 'Heavens Above!' is one of their more conspicuously neglected gems! This subtle, exquisitely acted, cleverly written Theological satire is blasted into comedy orbit by, Peter Sellers immaculate performance as the ingenuous, earnestly Christian, staunchly proletarian, Reverend Smallwood whose straight talking, socialist ideals unsettle the local plutocrats, and ultimately brings unprecedented chaos to the stiflingly conservative village of Orbiston Pava! Inspired, poignant, sweetly rabble-rousing, and wholly relevant, 'Heavens Above' is a dazzlingly celestial treat for vintage British comedy fans, and the estimable, virtuosic Mr. Sellers is ably supported by an astonishing cast, including, Ian Carmichael, Cecil Parker, Isabel Jeans, Roy Kinnear, Brock Peters, Eric Sykes, William Hartnell, Mark Eden, Joan Hickson, and there's even a charmingly cherubic appearance of the quite literally small faced, Steve Marriott! It has oft been claimed that the bitingly satirical, fabulously farcical 'Heavens Above!' was ahead of its time, perhaps, its time is now!?
